EU to crack down on greenwashing

Mar. 22, 2023

Europe – Great importance is attached to environmentally conscious consumer decisions. Customers like to orient themselves on product labels. However, labels are often opaque for consumers and offer scope for greenwashing. The EU Commission has now presented a new legislative proposal to increase trust in existing labels – there are currently 200 environmental labels in the EU. Voluntary labels from companies unaffected by any EU regulation will be subject to a catalog of criteria and an external audit in the future. In addition, the Green Claims Directive provides for stricter rules for the approval of new eco-labels and penalties for violations of the legal requirements.

NEXT STEPS: The European Parliament and the Council of the EU have yet to vote on the Green Claims Directive.
