EU Parliament once again in favor of tightening the CSDDD

Feb. 9, 2023

Europe – While the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act has already come into force on 01.01.2023, the legislative process for the European supply chain law is still in full swing. After the EU Commission presented a draft directive in February 2022 and the Council of the EU published its position on it in December last year, the EU Parliament is currently voting on its position. On February 9, the Parliament's Environment Committee took a position and voted in favor of tightening the climate protection requirements within the CSDDD. According to this, companies should ensure that their entire value chain becomes climate neutral by 2050. By comparison: Article 15 of the EU Commission's draft requires companies to submit a plan and strategy on how they will contribute to limiting global warming by 1.5 degrees.

NEXT STEPS: In March, the EU Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee will give its opinion. In May, the EU Parliament's plenary will vote on its official position on the draft. As soon as the EU Parliament's position has been determined, the trilogy vote between the EU Commission, the Council of the EU, and the EU Parliament on the final version of the directive will begin.
