Europe – The Council of the European Union has postponed the vote on the EU Supply Chain Directive.
This was announced by the Belgian EU Council Presidency last Friday, shortly before the vote was originally due to take place.
Negotiators from the Parliament and Member States had already reached an agreement on the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).
The vote in the Council should, therefore, only be a formality.
But Germany would have had to abstain in Brussels because the FDP in the traffic light coalition had refused to give its consent.
Other EU countries such as Sweden, Estonia, Finland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Cyprus, and Italy had also expressed reservations or even openly opposed the directive.
This would have made a majority impossible.
Due to the postponement, it is questionable whether the directive can be passed before the European elections at the beginning of June.
